VoIP cell phone systems are becoming a go-to option for many businesses because they solve many common phone problems.
Old phone lines can be expensive, hard to scale, and tricky to manage when your team grows or works remotely. With VoIP, you can make calls, send texts, and even have video meetings over the internet. That means lower costs and an easier setup for your team.
In this guide, we’ll talk about what VoIP cell phone system solutions are, what benefits they offer your business, and how to set up one for yourself.
Whether you manage a small team or a growing company, this article will walk you through the basics.
What is a VoIP Cell Phone System?
A VoIP cell phone system, often called a VoIP mobile app, is a business communications tool that lets you make and receive phone calls through the internet instead of using a traditional phone.
The app uses voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which changes your voice into digital signals and sends it across IP networks. This process allows you to connect from almost anywhere with a stable internet connection via Wi Fi or cellular data.
Unlike older desk phones and landline phones that needed copper wiring, a VoIP phone service works on mobile devices, tablets, or computers. This gives business owners and their teams the freedom to take business calls in or out of the office.
Many VoIP cell phone systems or apps also support extra features like call transfers, voicemail, and video meetings, which make them more than just a replacement for standard phones.
A major advantage of a VoIP phone is that it can often integrate with other business apps. For example, you can connect a VoIP solution with customer relationship management (CRM) software, project management apps, or help desk platforms.

How Does VoIP Work on Mobile Phones?
VoIP calls on mobile phones are simple once you break them down. Here’s how the process works step by step:
- When you speak into your phone, your voice is converted into small data packets.
- These packets are compressed and sent through Wi Fi or your cell phone plan’s data connection, such as 4G, LTE, or 5G.
- If the other person also uses VoIP, your VoIP provider passes the packets along. If they’re on a traditional phone line, the provider converts the packets back into regular sound.
- On the other end, your receiver just hears your voice like a normal phone call.
VoIP lets you make calls without being tied to a physical location. All you need is internet access, and you’re good to go.
Unlike cellular calls that use voice networks like VoLTE, VoIP runs on the same data network as apps and streaming. This gives you more flexibility, cheaper international calls, and extras like call forwarding and voicemail.

What Mobile VoIP Offers Your Business
Whether you work from home, run a small office, or manage a remote team, a VoIP service provider can help you handle business communication in smarter ways.
Here are some of the biggest benefits of switching to VoIP phone systems for your mobile device.
Keep Your Personal Number Private
One of the best benefits is being able to separate personal and business calls.
A VoIP cell phone system adds a second cell phone number on your device, so you don’t have to share your personal number with clients or staff.
All your business calls, texts, and voicemails stay in one place. This makes it easier to stay professional when talking with clients while keeping your personal number just for family and friends.
Collaborate With Your Team
VoIP providers give your team one shared platform where everyone can work together.
This type of setup improves collaboration in the workplace because employees can share a business line, assign numbers, and receive calls under the same account. No one has to worry about missed calls or busy signals.
When your team communicates better, your customers feel it. Quick answers, smooth inbound call handling, and clear updates lead to stronger relationships and better service.
Save Money On Communication
One of the biggest perks of using VoIP is how much money you can save. With a traditional phone plan, you’re stuck paying for high monthly fees, long-distance charges, and extra hardware.
But with VoIP conference phones, calls go through Wi-Fi or mobile data, so even international calls cost a fraction of what they would with a standard carrier.
You also don’t need to spend on bulky desk phones or pricey conference phones. Most VoIP cell phone systems work right on the devices you already use every day, like your smartphone or computer. That means no big upfront costs just to get started.
And since everything runs on software, you skip the usual headaches with maintenance. Updates happen automatically, and support is usually built into your plan.
Access Advanced Phone Features
With VoIP, you’re not just getting a regular phone line. You’re getting extra tools that make work a lot easier.
You can use video conferencing, visual voicemail, call recording, and even AI tools that label calls for easier tracking.
Many services integrate with business apps like Slack, HubSpot, or project management tools, so you can connect communication with your daily workflow.
The best part? Everything stays in one place. Your team can see what’s going on, follow up faster, and keep conversations organized.
Carry One Phone For Everything
Nobody wants to carry around two phones just to keep work and personal life separate. With a VoIP network, you can manage both on the same device without any hassle.
You get a second cell phone number for business, while your personal number stays private. That way, all your business telephone calls and voice calls stay in one place, and you don’t have to mix them with personal ones.
VoIP services also give you flexibility with how you present yourself. You can set different caller IDs, voicemail greetings, and even custom notifications for each line. So when your phone rings, you know right away whether it’s a client, a colleague, or a friend.

How to Get Started with Talkroute on iOS
The Talkroute iOS app lets you place calls with your Talkroute caller ID, check call history, and manage voicemail and mailboxes from your iPhone. Follow these four steps to get set up fast.
- Get the Talkroute app from the Apple App Store. Open it and allow push notifications so you receive new voicemail alerts even when the app is closed.
- Enter your Talkroute account email and password, then tap Sign In. When asked, allow access to Contacts so names appear in the app and you can start calls or texts from your address book.
- Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner, then choose Settings. Check that the Cellular Number matches your iPhone number. From this page, you can also set which Talkroute number shows when you make outgoing calls and texts.
- Once you’ve verified your number, you can start making calls. Open the Keypad. Select a contact or type a ten-digit US or Canada number. Tap Dial, review the prompt that shows your virtual phone number, then tap Call. Your caller ID will show your Talkroute number.
Please remember that using your Talkroute virtual number or any other number will prevent outgoing calls from connecting.
You can fix this by heading to Settings in the menu (the three bars in the top left) and updating your number.
If you use multiple Talkroute numbers, you can switch between them on the Keypad Page, and just keep in mind that the app works by dialing an access number through your iPhone’s regular dialer, so you’ll need both voice and data service for it to work.

How to Get Started with Talkroute on Android
Setting up the Talkroute app on your Android phone only takes a few minutes. Here’s a step-by-step guide.
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device and search for Talkroute. Download and install the app, then tap the Talkroute icon to open it.
- Enter your Talkroute account email and password, then tap Login. If you’re new to Talkroute, choose Create Account at the bottom of the screen and follow the prompts to set up your account.
- Once logged in, tap the menu icon (three bars in the top left corner). Select Go To Settings. Make sure your Android phone number appears in the Cellular Number field. Then choose which virtual number should display for Outgoing Calls. If your account has text messaging enabled, pick the number for Outgoing Texts as well.
- Once set up, open the Keypad, choose a contact or enter a 10-digit US/Canadian number, tap Dial, and your call will show your Talkroute caller ID.
Like iOS, entering any number (even your Talkroute number) other than your cellular number will block outgoing calls.
If you have multiple Talkroute numbers, you can switch between them in Settings (menu button with three bars in the top left) or directly from the Keypad Page before placing a call.
The app works by dialing an access number through your Android’s regular dialer, so you’ll need both voice and data service from your provider for it to work.
