The Simplified Call Path: How Your Mobile Dialing App Works

Though the connection is virtually instantaneous when you call someone, there is a surprising number of operations that have to take place before the call completes. Each of these operations is vital, sometimes quite complex, and they all happen in a fraction of a second.

In this article, we will explore one type of call that, if you’re a Talkroute user, you’re probably very familiar with—an outgoing call from your Talkroute mobile app.

Using your cell phone as a business line.

As one of our specialties at Talkroute, the system makes it easy for business owners who have a cell phone that doubles as a business phone. The mobile app was created so that you are the only one who knows that you’re calling from a mobile phone.

To your customers, you could be sitting at a desk in your office, wielding the handset attached to your corded desk phone—which is most likely what they want to think.

It makes a customer feel all warm-and-fuzzy inside, and they can go blissfully on thinking that you’re in your office because you’ve got a mobile dialing app that turns your cell phone into a business phone.

1. Dial Away

So you have the mobile app downloaded onto your smartphone, and you have just listened to a voicemail message through the app.

So you decided to call them back on the spot, you press the “Call Back” button in the app, and Voila! ..the call is sent and it’s on it’s split-second journey to the customer.

2. You Are Served

Once you have placed a call using the Talkroute mobile dialing app, the lightning-fast process begins and the app sends a signal to the Talkroute servers.

In this signal is contained a few necessary pieces of information, including your cell phone’s number and the number you are calling.

3. Robots Talking to Robots

This signal communicates with the Talkroute system, and it tells the system two things:

A) It is about to receive a call from your cell phone.
B) This call is intended to be an outbound call to a specific number.

Now that the system is informed about what’s happening and it’s primed for your call, the next phase starts (we’re still probably under a half-second worth of time at this point).

4. Preparing for Launch…

The app then places your call using your phone’s native dialer to the Talkroute system. So at this point, your call hasn’t even reached the mobile network yet, but it is on its way.

All the information has been gathered and delivered to Talkroute system so that it knows exactly what to do with your call.

5. Now the Party’s Getting Started

Now, the Talkroute system takes your call, sets the appropriate caller ID, and finally sends it to the number you initially dialed.

Here’s where it gets interesting because it’s been handed over the the larger network and out of the hands of the Talkroute system. But they do a pretty good job, most of the time.

6. Into the Great, Wide Open

The telephone network used by your cell phone provider is not utilized until the call has been sent to the destination by Talkroute, but once it has been sent, it is being routed over the network that is always used when you make a call from your cell phone.

7. The Old Switch-er-oo

So, let’s say that the customer that you are calling has an AT&T landline, but you have Verizon. Even though these are different networks, they still have to work together because the call has to be placed.

That means once your call is sent, it may start off on the cellular network, but by the time it reaches the landline, the connection is completed using the PSTN, or the traditional telephone network used by landlines. Depending on the carrier of each phone, there may also be multiple switches in between.

So the call is complete, and you’ve reached your customer to return their call in just around 1 second. Not bad, considering everything the call has gone through to reach its destination, and that’s how we all keep talking
